Katara has always danced to the beat of her own song - literally. Though trained in traditional Egyptain Cabaret and American Tribal Style, she found her niche in Fusion and Raks Gothique. She has always felt that to dance well, one had to dance from their heart, so if they weren't dancing to something they loved, how could they dance well? Taking this thought to heart, she has performed to not only traditional songs and melodies, but also rock music, industrial, electronica, progressive metal, power metal, and even classical opera. If it’s dark and moving, it gets Katara’s hips shaking.
In addition to unique music, Katara also utilizes numerous distinctive props. These include swords, fan-veils, votives, palm torches, shamadan (candelabra), Thai fingernails, and more.
Another of her trademark talents is to add a storyline to her solos. Trained in the theatre for over twenty years (and a writer herself), Katara loves to tell a tale with her dances. Through expression, moves, costuming, and props, she adds a unique twist to any song.
But, deep down, Katara simply loves to dance. Since discovering the art of belly dance in 2002, she has learned from and trained with numerous prestigious instructors including Kami Liddle, Sharon Kihara, Diosa, Anahid, Amira, Naimah, and even Suhaila Salimpour. Several summers ago, she was thrilled to learn from her favorite dancer, Ariellah, and hopes to get the opportunity to do so again.
Katara is a member of several dance troupes, including Osiris Dance with her dance partner, Diosa. The pair regularly perform at private parties and local events, as well as competing out of state. They are regular performers at the Arizona Steampunk Soceity's functions, including the annual Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention. They have also performed for over five years at the former Phoenix Comicon.
Recently, Katara has been bringing her dark brand of belly dance to several Burlesque troupes including being featured in several events with Burlescapades as well as numerous shows of the Circus Sideshow Collective the Pain Proof Punks.
Katara is also a featured member of Vraja Productions, a Gothic Theatre Troupe bringing dark theatrical pieces to the greater Phoenix area.
She is a member of the Desert Flowers, a sister troupe to Osiris directed by Diosa, as well.
In addition, Katara can regularly be seen dancing weekends at the Tandoori Times restaurants in Scottsdale and Glendale.
